Question 1.
Okay, granted that we can't live without political parties. But tell me on what
grounds do people support a political party?
Answer:
This type of party means here Indian political parties and their weakness, for
example-lack of internal democracy within democracy, challenge of dynastic
succession, growing role of money and muscle power in parties and very often
parties do not seem to offer a meaningful choice to the voters. Ordinary and
poor members of the party do not get sufficient information on what happens
inside the party. People do not have option to elect a new leader. So it has
been said that how do we live with the kind of political parties we have.

highlighted in these cartoons (on pages 83236 to 85) ? What are the ways to
curb the misuse of money and muscle power in politics ?
Answer:
Yes, we can identify the challenges shown in the cartoons given on pages 83 to

dynasticism within the party, money infilteration into parties and the
intrusion of crime and option lessness among the parties. The misuse of money
and muscle power plays a key role in generating these selections/challenges.
The main ways of preventing
the misuse of money and muscle power in politics are as follows:
- Steps should be taken against
corruption.
- People should be made aware
through the right to information.
- Ban on the election of brits
and criminals.
- Partisan law should be strictly
enforced.
- All candidates should make
their property information public.
- All parties should be made
compulsory to file income tax returns.
- Election expenses should be
fixed. Strict action should be taken against violators.
- Election expenses can be borne
by the government.

Answer:
In democracy the political parties have to face many challenges-
1. Lack of Internal Democracy- The first challenge is lack of internal
democracy within parties. All over the world there is a tendency in political
parties towards the concentration of power in one or few Icaders at the top.
2. Dynastic Succession- The
second challenge is of dynastic succession in politics. There are very few ways
for ordinary workers to rise to the top in a party. Those who happen to be the
leaders are in a position of unfair : advantages to favour people close to them

not have adequate experience or popular support come to occupy positions of
power.
3. Growing Role of Money

short-cuts to win elections. They tend to nominate those candidates who have or

Read the following passage and answer the questions given below:
Muhammad Yunus is a famous economist of Bangladesh. He received several
international honours for his efforts to promote economic and social development
for the benefit of the poor. He and the Grameen Bank he started jointly,
received the Nobel Peace Prize for the 2006. In February 2007, he decided to
launch a political party and contest in the parliamentary elections. His
objective was to foster proper leadership, good governance and build a new
Bangladesh. He felt that only a political party different from the traditional
ones would bring about new political culture. His party would be democratic
from the grassroots level.
The launching of the new party, called Nagarik Shakti (Citizens' Power), has
caused a stir among the Bangladeshis. While many welcomed his decision, some
did not like it. "Now I think Bangladesh will have a chance to choose
between good and bad and eventually have a good government,” said Shahedul
Islam, a government official. “That government, we hope, would not only keep
itself away from corruption but also make fighting corruption and black money a
top priority.”
But leaders of traditional political parties who dominated the country's
politics for decades were apprehensive. “There was no debate (over him) winning
the Nobel, but politics is different-very challenging and often controversial,”
said a senior leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. Some others were
highly critical. They asked why he was rushing into politics. “Is he being
planted in politics by mentors from outside the country,” asked one political
observer.
Do you think Yunus made a right decision to float a new political party?
Do you agree with the statements and fears expressed by various people? How do
you want this new party organised to make it different from other parties? If
you were the one to begin this political party how would you defend it?
Answer:
(i) I think Yunus made right decision to form a new political party.
(ii) Yes, I agree to the statements and fears of all people which have been
taken for the progress of democratic public, who agree with Yunus' decision.
(iii) This political party should work in favour of all the people.
(iv) If I were the founder of this party I would make people sure that the main
objective of this party is public welfare.
